A Brief History

The early days of Fred Miller.

The name of Fred Miller is a landmark in Southeast Texas. A family owned business that’s meant quality and personal service since 1919.

Fred Miller opened his first business, a bicycle shop, on Austin St. in Pt. Arthur. Since his building was next to the new post office, he also assisted in spreading the word around town of any news of importance. As his business grew, he expanded into lawn mowers, sporting equipment, and electric fans. Everything they sold, they would repair.

The business was further expanded when Fred’s wife, Florence, added a pet shop and artist supplies. By then, Fred Miller’s was listed in Dunn & Bradstreet.

By the 1930’s, the Depression years, Fred Miller had earned a reputation of integrity, playing Santa Claus to thousands of Pt. Arthur children. The new toy department was a huge success!

In 1946, Fred’s oldest son, Don, returned from World War II and started working full time managing his father’s new store on 16th St.  The downtown store was eventually sold and the entire operation moved to 16th St. The business grew again with a separate “Toy Palace” built next door. In 1974, the business was destroyed by fire, but the Miller family persevered, committed to their customers and re-opened the business in the feed store next door. Fred Miller passed away in 1975 leaving the business to his son, Don.

Fred Millers continued to grow with a second location in Nederland opening in 1980.  The original store, now located in Groves, is strictly an outdoor store, selling lawnmowers, lawn equipment and bicycles, managed by Don’s son, Mark. Fred Miller’s in Nederland, managed by Chris Miller, has expanded his store to now include the largest selection of baby beds and bedding between Houston and Lake Charles, exquisite collectiables like Jay Strongwater, fashionable home and garden accessories, and of course, a large toy department with many nostalgic toys.

Our website is now the newest edition to the Fred Miller business, now managed by Don’s son, Chris. Don Miller recently passed away leaving Fred Miller’s to a 3rd generation to carry on their tradition of quality and personal service. We hope you enjoy shopping with us.

Fred Miller’s wishes each of you a safe and happy Holiday Season!
